Normally id be inclined to believe its a hardware issue, but with it happening to both machines a few days apart I find it hard to believe thats the case.ДЄny further ideas, im desperate for help at this point. I have tried clearing the pram on both machines (the apple-option-p-r thing) and this also made no difference. As far as im aware the iMacs firmware is also up to date.

It still had the problem before I reapplied the updates so that rules out an apple update issue. With them both been on 10.4.11 I thought it may be related to an update, but last night I fully wiped the iMac and reinstalled OSX. The ethernet card shows correctly in system profiler and everywhere else. Essentially it appears to not detect a cable plugged in. However, in the drop down lists it does still show the built in ethernet, but when a cable is plugged in it does not obtain an ip address, and does not work with manually input details either.
